Around 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 8th, 2016, the Kern County Fire Department along with Bakersfield Police Department responded to a vehicle rollover accident on Morning Drive. The vehicle rollover accident happened just south of Highway 178. Officers found two men with fatal injuries and three others that had to be transported to the local hospital for minor injuries.
The driver, along with two other survivors were standing outside the car when the authorities arrived. The driver was beyond the wheel of a white Chevrolet sedan traveling southbound on Morning drive when he passed another vehicle that was traveling southbound. The driver then merged back into the proper lane but continued to merge right and went off an embankment.
The two passengers that were killed were ejected from the vehicle.
Officials stated the driver, Tony Bailey, 22, was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and booked into the Kern County Jail for felony DUI and two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
This type of accident is heartbreaking because it should never happen. When attempting to driving while impaired, it is extremely difficult to merge properly. There should never be a case in which a driver is behind the wheel of a vehicle attempting to transport four people to a destination.
